There is a place where birch wood is waiting to become a loom, or a shuttle one day. Visiting this place was a great pleasure.
Toika Ltd. was founded in 1898 and has been owned by the same family for 5 generations. Since 1920 the company is based in Toijala, 140 km north from Helsinki.
They started with producing weaving reeds and other accesories. Nowadays they sell looms all over the world – traditional looms, but also computer and pneumatic looms. It is also possible to order damask loom, but there is no interest in it recently :-(.
I admire Finnish design – plain and functional. I’m sentimental about Toika looms – I learned to weave using such looms in early 90-ties. Besides, they are all mainly in countermarch system, of which I’m a big fan.
This year is special for Yrjölä family (it was great pleasure to meet Jukka and Mona and be a host in their home few years ago) – the company celebrates 120 years, and the next generation is involved in running the business. You can see the short movie here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFG8I8_EP3o .
I wish them all the best and many happy customers all year round!
